"Clean and sinewy in build, the entire dog was one live wire. His character was on a par with his exterior qualities; marvellous in his obedient fidelity to his master, and above all else, the straightforward nature of a gentleman with a boundless zest for living. Never idle, always on the go; well disposed to harmless people, but no cringer, mad about children and always in love. He was in Heaven when someone was occupied with him and was then the most tractable of dogs."

- Captain Max von Stephanitz, founding father of the German Shepherd Dog

GSA IRELAND promotes the German Shepherd Dog breed and working dog sport in Ireland The GSA represents one of 75 countries with affiliated membership of the World Union of German Shepherd Dog Clubs (WUSV). Local groups can provide handlers and dogs with the very best training and experience at well equipped facilities in disciplines which include obedience, tracking, agility, ring craft and protection work. GSA members can attain in Ireland, BH (the basic obedience, traffic safe dog test) AD (Endurance) and IPO/Schutzhund qualifications, and breed surveys recognized throughout the world. GSA members are entitled to avail of the opportunity to have their dogs DNA registered, micro-chipped, and X-Rayed under the German SV hip and elbow scheme - adopted as GSA Ireland's grading scheme in 2009 - and spine x-rays are also now newly available.

At the GSA Annual General Meeting, held on Sunday, January 31, 2016 in the Green Isle Hotel, Dublin, the GSA Ireland President, Cedric Blackbourne, made the following announcement:
"The Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine (DAFM) has appointed GSA Ireland as keeper and administrator of the Breed Book for the German Shepherd Dog in Ireland under Statutory Instrument No. 150/1994 European Communities (Registration of Pedigree Animals) Regulations 1994.
A spokesperson for the GSA Ireland Breed Committee stated:
“The GSA will be ready to accept registrations of puppies and adult dogs on May 01, 2016 and the GSA webpage will provide updated information.”

GSA pedigrees will provide proof of parentage through DNA, information on the health and working qualifications of ancestors and will provide space for the inclusion of health results, working qualifications, and proof of DNA and will stay with the dog for life.

There are eight local groups serving the North, South, East and West of Ireland. There are four regional clubs covering all areas of the country, one in each province of Ireland (known as Landesgruppen Clubs) and named after the four provinces of Ireland, Ulster, Munster, Leinster and Connaught. Please have a look at our GSA Groups page to find your local group.
