"Clean and sinewy in build, the entire dog was one live wire. His character was on a par with his exterior qualities; marvellous in his obedient fidelity to his master, and above all else, the straightforward nature of a gentleman with a boundless zest for living.
Never idle, always on the go; well disposed to harmless people, but no cringer, mad about children and always in love.
He was in Heaven when someone was occupied with him and was then the most tractable of dogs."
- Captain Max von Stephanitz, founding father of the breed.

WUSV WORLD IPO CHAMPIONSHIPS 2012
The National German Shepherd Working Dog Association Ireland, GSA Ireland congratulates the Irish team which competed at the WUSV World Championship in Steyr, Austria from October 3 - 7, 2012.
Lead by team captain - current Irish and British National IPO Champion Paul Flanagan - and vice-captain Andrea Leamy, with assistance from helper Nick Warman, the team were:
Paul Flanagan with Sepp Von Haus Silma, who came 11th out of 146 entrants with a score of 95 in tracking, 93 in obedience and 94 in protection with total points of 282.
Tommy Murphy with Tyson von der Staatsmacht who came 36th with 93-86-92 (271)
Colm Cussen with Vongraf Levi scored 4-73-89.
The Irish team was singled out for particular praise in the protection phase by judge Josef Vonarburg (Switzerland) in the judges' report:
"Particularly striking is the fact that England had been very strongly represented and achieved excellent performances...as regards the very good work, the same is also true for Ireland. (Mr Vonarburg) especially emphasises this nation as it did not have many chances in the past to show its dogs."
GSA Ireland would like to thank Bohemians football club for kindly allowing the use of Dalymount football stadium for team training and to Macron, manufacturers of the team tracksuits which have been kindly sponsored by Karanberg.
Overall winner was Helmut Huber of Germany with Hank von Weinbergblick
The winning team was Slovakia

There are nine local groups serving the North, South, East and West of Ireland.
GSA Ireland welcomes the newest affiliated group, OG PREMIER in Co Tipperary.
There are four regional clubs covering all areas of the country, one in each province of Ireland (known as Landesgruppen Clubs) and named after the four provinces of Ireland, Ulster, Munster, Leinster and Connaught.
The GSA represents one of 75 countries with affiliated membership of the World Union of German Shepherd Dog Clubs (WUSV). Local groups can provide handlers and dogs with the very best training and experience at well equipped facilities in disciplines which include obedience, tracking, agility, ring craft and protection work. GSA members can now attain in Ireland, BH (the basic obedience, traffic safe dog test) AD (Endurance) Obedience, Tracking, and Protection for IPO/Schutzhund qualifications, and breed surveys recognized throughout the world.
GSA members are entitled to avail of the opportunity to have their dogs DNA registered, micro-chipped, and X-Rayed under the German hip and elbow scheme with the approval of local veterinary surgeons using the latest digital IT technology.
The GSA in collaboration with the WUSV will introduce an addendum pedigree to the existing Irish
and English kennel club pedigrees which will provide the owner with proof of parentage through DNA, relevant information on the health and working qualifications of ancestors and will provide space for the inclusion of hip and elbow results, working qualifications, and proof of DNA and will stay with the dog for life.
Please have a look at our GSA Groups page to find your local group.
